If you are looking for the heart of the community in Raymore, Missouri, look no further than T.B. Hanna Station. As a local real estate professional with the Home Connection Team KC at LPT Realty and the founder of Highlight My Town, I live and work right here in Raymore. I’ve had the pleasure of watching this space transform into a stand-out destination for accessibility and family fun.

I recently caught up with Nathan Musteen, Raymore Parks & Recreation Director, for a tour of the grounds (you can see our full interview over on the Highlight My Town YouTube channel). As we walked through the park, Nathan pointed out that T.B. Hanna Station is effectively our city’s “newest park with the oldest history.” It sits on the exact block that once housed the city’s original 1871 train depot, as well as the early police department and city hall.

A National Award-Winner in Our Backyard

While it may be a local park, T.B. Hanna Station has gained national attention. In 2022, it was named the Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA).

This project represents a massive collaboration between Raymore Parks & Recreation, CFS Engineers, Unlimited Play, and All-Inclusive Recreation. It’s a space that honors our history while serving every single resident, regardless of their physical abilities.

Breaking Barriers: The First of Its Kind

What truly sets T.B. Hanna Station apart is its commitment to universal design. It is the first park in the United States to feature two universally accessible play spaces in the same location.

The Variety KC Inclusive Playground

With a $135,000 grant from Variety Children’s Charity of Greater Kansas City, this space ensures no child is left on the sidelines. Features include:

  • Accessible Zip Lines & Swings: Engineered for safety and thrills for everyone.

  • Musical Instruments & Merry-Go-Round: Encouraging sensory play and social interaction.

  • Communication Boards: These display illustrations to help children with limited language skills express their needs and interact with peers.

The Variety KC Inclusive Sprayground

This is the first sprayground in Missouri specifically designed for full accessibility.

  • The Custom Train: A nod to the site’s railroad heritage, this structure is wide enough for wheelchairs and walkers.

  • Sensory Magic: The area features overhead sprinklers, splash buckets, sound effects, and an LED light display.

  • Zero-Entry Design: A completely flat surface ensures there are no barriers for those using mobility devices.

A Year-Round Hub: From Water to Ice

The park is designed to be a “365” destination. The Depot, the spacious covered pavilion, hosts accessible picnic tables in the summer. When winter arrives, it transforms into The Rink—a custom-designed ice skating rink that serves as the centerpiece of our local winter season.
